I’ve also started two personal projects I’ve been dieing to do for actually years now. ‘The BeeKeeper’ painting on a 6′ open fan (upcycled…), and Epona the horse goddess, a beaded horse skull I found while out hiking in the desert here in Arizona.
The BeeKeeper could also be considered a tribute to this Liberation Skirt Project. The background and the BeeKeepers dress will be painted like honeycomb, dripping honey, covered with bee’s she will be sporting a beautiful Queen Bee necklace at the throat. The large white honeycomb shapes will be mini landscapes of flowers…
The beads and objects covering Epona have been found, upcycled or gifted to me by friends and other artists knowing I would eventually find the right place for them and include my mothers hearing aid batteries!
Keeps me busy and out of trouble most of the time. LOL
White Dress project is on its last legs, if I didn’t have a door to frame today and a shelf to put up… it would get done today, maybe… working on the written word written on by laundry marker (not so recycled I know but…) One kerchief drop sleeve, and a knotted sleeve, embroidery over crayon prints and runes embroidered around the lace collar.
Progress on The White Dress. I opened the back with unhemmed or stitched horizontal cuts, then braided from shoulder to center and down the back. This is 100% organic cottonw, tshirt weave so it doesnt fray and tends to curl for a chord affect.
Then I got busy with some earth and pagan symbol sketches transferred with black crayon onto fine sandpaper and hot iron printed onto the fabric.
Hope you like, still more to come!
Liberation Skirt Project #2 – The White Dress. One of my room renters left behind a white dress that is about 3 sizes to big for me, sooooo, here we go. From this to this, so far: the waste tie has been removed and smocked over to gather in for fit, one sleeve removed though I’m still not sure what I am doing for the sleeves… a white lace collar created symbolic of Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s has been inserted to replace the plain white bodice top There will be black on white quotes from 2020 written on the dress using a permanent marker, black lace, and black and white kerchief pieces in triangles around the hem, the back will be cut in several horizontal strips between back seams and layered over like a braid weave. I may crayon, mono print the American Flag on there first, and there will be a few other mono print logo/slogans along the lines of ‘Black Lives Matter’ and ‘Me Too’. I may embroider some slogans in black thread and leave thread hanging, I may shag one sleeve as is and bead with large black beads and the other a kerchief tie… who knows at this point, just glad to be making progress! I may crochet some black, red, and white roses to add here and there too…
YES! DONE. My first Liberation Skirt Project is completed. The feminine inspirations of my life, from my own self portrait hippy of the 1960s and 70s through my artistic endeavors, Earth pagan beliefs, right up to today’s political arena of unrest and continued segregation in the US.
I’ve tried to tell the story of each applique with each piece so I won’t repeat here. I do want to state that Greta Thunberg speaks to my own heart, I have been a student and sometimes activist for the environment since my early 20’s.
And that completing Lady Liberty as the model for the sculpture, and not the sculpture itself, and inspired by the Pagan Goddess ‘Libertas’ was to demonstrate that in today’s US of A she would have been considered a ‘woman of color’, an immigrant, and a heretic, and yet she stands tall in one of our most inviting harbors as a symbol to our freedoms.

Wendy was influenced creatively by her desert, nature loving, landscape architect, stone mason, Uncle Kenneth Kriegh of SW California fame. A student of Fine Arts through High School, in 1970, right out of Fairfax High School, LA, Wendy joined the hippy migration to the Pacific NW, where she found herself barefoot and pregnant in BC Canada for the next 30+…
